Let's Play: Pro Evolution Soccer 2011

It's time for a new performance comparison... It's time for (perhaps) the most addictive soccer game in history... Ladies and Gentlemen.. Pro Evolution Soccer 2011!!!!

A hard choice!

Alright, let's talk 'bout which program you're gonna use for this game.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 on GameTree Linux:

Don't even try that. The game doesn't work on GameTree Linux!

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 on Crossover Games (10.1.1 version):

Well, the game works. But music and commentary do not work (even with a workaround that works on Wine), so the only thing you're gonna hear while you're playing is the sound of the ball and the audience. If you don't like annoying commentary or crappy music, you could appreciate it. But i don't think you will appreciate the fact that the game goes too fast during some phases of the match or during the videos. As you will see, and i don't know how to explain it, the frame rate goes to the stars in some occasions, and the highest number of frames is an astonishing 715!!! The game, anyway, is playable, but it is almost perfect on Wine! It needs also a noDVD crack and two other runtime packages in order to be ran. So:

- Needs a noDVD crack.
- Needs "Microsoft Directx Runtime - Modern" and "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable".
- Needs a little tweak (explained below) to make GFX sound work.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 on PlayOnLinux (1.3.26 wine version):

What can i say? The game works almost perfect! Sound works well (GFX, music and commentary) if "Windows 7" is set under Wine Configuration (rarely the sound stops during a match, but very, very rarely) and performances are GREAT even at full details. USB controllers also works. Of course it needs a noDVD crack and two runtime packages. So:

- Needs a noDVD crack.
- Needs "directx9" and "vcrun2005" packages.
- Needs a little tweak (explained below) to make sound work.

This time, FPS are good and the game is playable in each and every in-game situation.

Talking about performances...

First of all, my hardware (please notice my hardware upgrade!!):

agp_aperture_size: 256
cpu: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor

distro: Ubuntu 11.04 natty

videocard_type: GeForce GTX 550 Ti/PCI/SSE2
x_version: X.Org X Server 1.10.1

I'm sad to tell you that the game doesn't work on Chakra. Someone said that is playable on Arch Linux, but i couldn't do it. I'm sorry for that. So now, my graphs will show the difference between Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit version (with no Compiz) and Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

That's what i've been saying before... Performances are great on wine, i could say as great as Windows. Unfortunately, Crossover does not work so well, increasing the frames too much.
As you could probably notice also, i wasn't able to run Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 with high settings on Crossover Games, so i tested only PlayOnLinux with high settings and i compared it to Windows 7.

Conclusion: use PlayOnLinux/Wine.

Installation

The process takes about 15 minutes.
At the end of the installation, do this:

- Apply a noDVD crack.
- Install "directx9" and "vcrun2005" packages via Winetricks.
- Set "Windows 7" as OS under Wine Configuration to make sound work.

Now you can adjust some options running "settings.exe" and then play the game running "pes2011.exe" (or just use PlayOnLinux shortcuts).

Running

That's all. Feel free to send me an email or leave a comment if you got some problems or if you just wanna ask me a question. I will always answer you!
