Let's Play: Steam Linux Beta Client

http://store.steampowered.com/

About

06/11/2012. A historic day. Valve releases his first Steam Linux Client ever. 60.000 people filled the beta survey and asked for a beta pass, but only a few of them are now able to try it... Or not?
Yes, it doesn't care if you have been picked as beta tester or not, some Linux users have found a hack so you can open the client and you can also play a few games (only if you have already bought one of the Humble Indie Bundles).
As now, the client is only available for Ubuntu and Arch Linux users.
Download it here:

http://media.steampowered.com/client/installer/steam.deb (Ubuntu)
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/steam/ (Arch Linux)

Now follow my installation video if you want to know how to run the client if you're not a beta tester.
As i said before, there are many games which can be already played, but the first thing to do (if you have not done it before) is to redeem all your HIB Steam keys.
This is a list of playable games:

- Aquaria
- Cogs
- Cubemen
- Darwinia
- Dungeons of Dredmor
- Frozen Synapse
- Space Pirates and Zombies
- Uplink
- World of Goo

Waiting for the beta client to be opened to everyone and for some games to be played, here are some screenshots and videos.

Let's Play: Runaway - A Road Adventure

Ahoy captain! Ask me about Loom... Ahem, that was the wrong videogame. This is one of the best adventure games ever created since the golden era of the point-and-click adventure games (early 90's). Great graphics, deep plot, a beautiful woman, a smart guy, some crazy people and a group of dancing transexuals.. Ladies and gentlemen, this is "Runaway: A Road Adventure"!!!!

A hard choice...

Runaway - A Road Adventure on Crossover XI (11.2.0 engine):

The game installs and works perfectly!

Runaway - A Road Adventure on PlayOnLinux (Wine 1.5.12 version):

The game installs and works perfectly!

Well, this is a 2001 videogame, so it is supposed to work with both Crossover XI and PlayOnLinux/Wine. In fact, the game works good with both programs so the question is: are you a Crossover customer? If not, just use Wine and you'll be satisfied. As Crossover customer, i use Crossover to support it.

Talking about performances?

First of all my hardware:

agp_aperture_size: 256
cpu: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor
cpu_ghz: 0.80
distro: Ubuntu 12.04 precise
kernel: 3.2.0-31-generic
machine_bitness: 64
memory: 3953
soundcard: HDA ATI SB at 0xfbcf4000 irq 16
soundcard_driver: ALSA Version 1.0.24
videocard_direct: True
videocard_driver_version: 4.2.0 NVIDIA 304.43
videocard_manufacturer: NVIDIA Corporation
videocard_ram: 1024
videocard_type: GeForce GTX 550 Ti/PCIe/SSE2
x_version: X.Org X Server 1.11.3

Unfortunately, i had some troubles in showing FPS, so i couldn't make a comparison between Ubuntu and Windows. BUT, since this is an old game, and it does not require any powerful machine, it works really good, without any FPS drop or any stuttering.

Conclusion: use whatever you want, Crossover XI or PlayOnLinux/Wine.

Installation

This is the DVD installation from the DVD contained into "Runaway 2: The Dream of the Turtle".
The process takes about 3 minutes.
If you do the complete installation, you won't need any noDVD crack, so i suggest it.

Let's Play: Darwinia

Welcome again to a new Let's Play! Do you wanna know what's one of the greatest things in this life? Native Linux games! This time i wanna talk about a game called... Darwinia! Many of you already know that game, because it is simply one of the best indie games ever created. In a virtual world, you control some people called Darwinians, and the aim of the game is to destroy some viruses created by the evil Dr. Sepulveda.

A matter of choice?

Since this is a native Linux game, and you are a Linux user (YOU ARE A LINUX USER, ARE YOU?!??), take a deep breath and play the game under your distro.

Talking about performances...

First of all, my hardware:

agp_aperture_size: 256
cpu: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor
cpu_ghz: 0.80
distro: Ubuntu 12.04 precise
kernel: 3.2.0-29-generic
machine_bitness: 64
memory: 3953
soundcard: HDA ATI SB at 0xfbcf4000 irq 16
soundcard_driver: ALSA Version 1.0.24
videocard_direct: True
videocard_driver_version: 4.2.0 NVIDIA 304.37
videocard_manufacturer: NVIDIA Corporation
videocard_ram: 1024
videocard_type: GeForce GTX 550 Ti/PCIe/SSE2
x_version: X.Org X Server 1.11.3

This is a native Linux game, so you MUST expect great performances. Let's see in detail:

Well, the game runs great on Ubuntu, almost like Windows. So enjoy your game at full details without frameskips! Remember, Compiz effects must be disabled while playing.

Installation

The game is available on Desura if you bought the Humble Introversion Bundle. If don't, you have the .deb package.
The installation process takes about a minute.

Running

That's all. Feel free to send me an email or leave a comment if you got some problems or if you just wanna ask me a question. I will always answer you!

The Humble Bundle for Android #3

http://www.humblebundle.com

Ay fellas! After a little parenthesis about music, the Humble Bundle team goes on to another REAL bundle with videogames! This is the third package involving the open source OS called Android for mobile phones and tablets. So you can play those videogames on your phones or tablets, but remember, this bundle contains native Linux clients, so you can also enjoy them on your Linux distro!
Let's see in detail which games you can find inside the package:

- Fieldrunners: Take your towers on the offensive against an endless sprawl of baddies in this tower defense classic.

- BIT.TRIP BEAT: a charming, retro-inspired music rhythm game. Players must deflect an onslaught of projectiles, each successful deflection resulting in a musical sound.

- SpaceChem: players take on the role of a Reactor Engineer, designing complex reactors that transform raw atoms into the complex chemicals needed to survive sinister threats on the frontier colonies of space.

- UpLink: Break into computer systems and nab valuable, secret information as you take on the role of a hacker for-hire in Uplink.

And... If you pay more than the average price (now about $6), you will also get:

- Spirits: In this beautiful puzzle-platformer, autumn has arrived and you must help the spirits of fallen leaves find their way home.

That's not all! You will also get all the soundtracks, in FLAC or MP3 high quality format. You can also redeem these games on Steam (which is going to arrive on Linux too, NR).
So, what are you waiting for? Pay what you want, help charity, don't be stupid and be quick! You still have 11 days!!

The Humble Music Bundle

http://www.humblebundle.com

Hi everybody. Well, this comes too late. This bundle is already over... I'm sorry for that. Anyway, i'd like to introduce to you a new bundle concept by the Humble Bundle team. This time, there were not games, but music albums from some famous internet's musicians. These albums also came all in FLAC and MP3 high quality files!
Let's take a look in detail:

- OK Go - Twelve remixes of four songs: Twelve Remixes of Four Songs — a collection of remixes of some of the best songs from 2010's Of the Blue Colour of the Sky along with studio versions of those tracks

- MC Frontalot - Favoritism: A digital box set of Frontalot's choicest cuts, curated by the MC himself. Thrill along to top hits and unearthed treasures! Devour 6,000 words of wildly revelatory and/or self-indulgent liner notes! Spanning seven years and five albums, Favoritism is the first true document of the risen era of nerdcore hip-hop.

- They Might Be Giants - Album raises new and troubling questions: A rarities collection of songs recorded during the band's sessions for their most recent full length album Join Us.

- Christopher Tin - Calling all downs: Christopher Tin's debut album Calling All Dawns redefines the phrase "epic musical journey". It won two GRAMMY awards, including the only GRAMMY ever to be given for a video game song (for Baba Yetu, the theme from Civilization IV). Sung in 12 different languages, the album explores the cycle of life, death, and rebirth as told through the poems and prayers of different cultures around the world.

- Hitoshi Sakamoto - Best of the Valkyria Chronicles: Rediscover your memories from the acclaimed Valkyria Chronicles series with this compilation featuring the best music from all 3 games. From composer Hitoshi Sakimoto (Final Fantasy XII, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics), experience the orchestrated melodies of the main themes, the adrenaline-pumping battle pieces and reminisce on the adventures from all the characters in Gallia.

- Jonathan Coulton - Jonathan Coulton's greatest hit (plus 13 other songs): It's hard to pick the 14 best songs from Jonathan Coulton's catalog because, really, they are all the best. But this collection has many of the favorites you know, along with a few you probably don't, including tracks from his latest album, Artificial Heart, and three brand new live tracks from his recent Artificial Heart tour. Which is his greatest hit? Only you can decide!

And.... If you paid more that the average price ($8.37) you already got 9 extra songs from these artists, plus downloadable sheet music of the Valkyria main theme!
So... Were you stupid or were you quick?

Let's Play: Mednafen

http://mednafen.sourceforge.net
Welcome to a new Let's Play! I'm sorry for the big delay, i had some exams and a lot of troubles in my real life so i couldn't dedicate much time to UGP. But now i'm here with a new tutorial.
So, what's Mednafen? This unproneunceable program is none other than a powerful multisystem terminal-based emulator for Linux! And this time i used it to play some old Nintendo 8-Bit (NES) games! Now you're thinking "why should i use a terminal-based emulator when there are two alternatives with a front-end?". The answer is simple: the other 2 emulators don't work for me. I'm talking about GFCEU (a front-end for FCEU emulator) which seems to have issues with sound, and FCEUX, which crashes after 30 seconds of playing (and apparently there's no workaround). Anyway, this emulator is easy to install and to set-up. Let's see how!

This must be the choice!

Mednafen has its own Linux client, so there's no choice.

Talking about performances...

First of all, my hardware:

agp_aperture_size: 256
cpu: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor
cpu_ghz: 0.80
distro: Ubuntu 12.04 precise
kernel: 3.2.0-27-generic

videocard_manufacturer: NVIDIA Corporation
videocard_ram: 1024
videocard_type: GeForce GTX 550 Ti/PCIe/SSE2
x_version: X.Org X Server 1.11.3

Sound and graphics work like a charm on Ubuntu 12.04 64-Bit!

Installation

The process takes about 1 minute.

Update: added 3 games to The Humble Indie Bundle V

http://www.humblebundle.com

Yes, you got it! Other 3 great games have been added to The Humble Indie Bundle V!
IMHO, this makes this bundle the best bundle ever created, because now, if you beat the average price (about $8), you have 8 games!!!
And we're talking about some of the best indie games of all time! But let's take a look at the new 3 games added yesterday:

- Braid: does this game need an introduction? It's simply one of the most beautiful puzzle platform games of all time!

- Lone Survivor: a psychological survival adventure created by the one-man studio, Superflat Games!

- Super Meat Boy: again, a game which doesn't need an introduction. You'll surely recognize the game when you'll see the video!

You know, each time a new bundle comes out, i say the catchphrase "don't be stupid and be quick".
Well, this time, and i'm serious, with a few dollars (or euros), you will get 8 awesome games, and i assure you that they are worth it. Come on, don't be stupid. Don't be a fool. Be quick!

Let's Play: Metro 2033

Oh yeah! After months of "Let's Play" inactivity (due to sickness and university), here i am again to tell you how to play a great game which now is only $10 on Steam, an awesome FPS with incredible graphics and deep plot. Ladies and gentlemen... Metro 2033!

A superhard choice!

Let's say that either Crossover XI and PlayOnLinux work the same, the only difference is a little performance difference. Let's take a look!

Metro 2033 on GameTree Linux:

Oh come on, this program has never been updated for years, you can't even think about running this game on GameTree Linux.

Metro 2033 on Crossover XI (11.0.3 version):

Well, Crossover is being updated frequently, and it is now based on Wine 1.4, so i can tell you that Steam works perfectly. Installing the game from Steam means only to download over 7 GB and some runtime packages (which Steam downloads by itself). Of course it doesn't even need a noDVD crack. So i should say it works perfect. No way. Unfortunately, Metro 2033 is a great game, but it needs a big hardware, and the lack of compatibility of some Windows libraries makes the game very slow at high details. Also, remember that on Linux (it doesn't care if you use Crossover or Wine), Directx 11 are not supported, so you can only play the game with Directx 9. Anyway, at low details, you can play the game and enjoy it. So:

- Installs perfectly.
- It doesn't need any noDVD crack.
- Low performances.

Metro 2033 on PlayOnLinux (1.5.5 wine version):

Same as Crossover XI, but there's a little FPS boost (a couple of frames, nothing more). So:

- Installs perfectly.
- It doesn't need any noDVD crack.
- Low performances (slightly better than Crossover XI).

Talking about performances...

First of all, my hardware:

agp_aperture_size: 256
cpu: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor
cpu_ghz: 0.80
distro: Ubuntu 12.04 precise
kernel: 3.2.0-25-generic
machine_bitness: 64
memory: 3953
soundcard: HDA ATI SB at 0xfbcf4000 irq 16
soundcard_driver: ALSA Version 1.0.24
videocard_direct: True
videocard_driver_version: 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.53
videocard_manufacturer: NVIDIA Corporation
videocard_ram: 1024
videocard_type: GeForce GTX 550 Ti/PCIe/SSE2
x_version: X.Org X Server 1.11.3

I already said that PlayOnLinux (1.5.5 wine version) gives a little FPS boost. Let's take a look at the graphs:

As you can see, even on Windows i have "only" 27 FPS (average) at very high details. That means the game is heavy. If you want to play the game, i suggest you to choose Wine/PlayOnLinux.

Conclusion: use PlayOnLinux.

Installation

The process depends on your speed connection. For me (600 KB/s), it took me about 3 hours.
At the end of the installation process, and when clicking on "play" Steam will download some other runtime packages (other 2 or 3 minutes).

Running

Sorry if the video stutters, but the game is pretty heavy and it ran while FFMpeg was recording, so there was a FPS drop.

That's all. Feel free to send me an email or leave a comment if you got some problems or if you just wanna ask me a question. I will always answer you!

Let's Play: Test Drive Unlimited

Today i tested for you a racing game, a great racing game, with wonderful landscapes and awesome cars... Ladies and gentlemen, Test Drive Unlimited!

A very hard choice!

That's true. This time the choice is very hard! Wanna know why? Please continue reading...

Test Drive Unlimited on GameTree Linux:

The game is not supported so i'm not gonna consider that.

Test Drive Unlimited on Crossover XI (11.0.0 version):

Alright, the game installs fine, and with a couple of tweaks it runs great (apart from a little water textures issue)! You need a noDVD crack (see below for more infos), you need to set "Windows Vista" as OS into wine configuration to make mouse work, and you have to do a little trick to set your joypad. So:

- Needs a noDVD crack (this one http://dl.gamecopyworld.com/?c=725495341&d=2007&f=vty-tdu!rar)
- Set "Windows Vista" into Wine Configuration to make mouse work.
- If you want to play with a joypad, you can't bind the keys running the original executable. You have to click on "run command...", set "/pathtoinstalldirectory/TestDriveUnlimited.exe 2>&1 | grep joydev_enum_device" as executable, click on "Debug Options", then "Create log file" and put the line "+dinput" into "Other:". Then run. Now you can bind your joypad buttons. You have to do it the first time only, then it's no more necessary.
- Water textures displays over the other textures (a minor issue, anyway).

Test Drive Unlimited on PlayOnLinux 4.0.15 (1.4-rc4 wine version):

The game installs fine and runs great with the same tweaks as Crossover XI. The only difference is how you set the joypad.

You have to go click on your Test Drive Unlimited shortcut, then "Configure", then go into "miscellaneous" tab and "Open a shell". Now navigate into TDU's directory and run "WINEDEBUG=+dinput wine TestDriveUnlimited.exe 2>&1 | grep joydev_enum_device". Now you can bind your joypad buttons. You have to do it the first time only, then it's no more necessary.
- Water textures displays over the other textures (a minor issue, anyway).

Performances... Performances....

First of all, my hardware:

agp_aperture_size: 256
cpu: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor
cpu_ghz: 0.80
distro: Ubuntu 11.10 oneiric
kernel: 3.0.0-17-generic
machine_bitness: 64
memory: 3960
soundcard: HDA ATI SB at 0xfbcf4000 irq 16
soundcard_driver: ALSA Version 1.0.24
videocard_direct: True
videocard_driver_version: 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.20
videocard_manufacturer: NVIDIA Corporation
videocard_ram: 1024
videocard_type: GeForce GTX 550 Ti/PCIe/SSE2
x_version: X.Org X Server 1.10.4

Test Drive Unlimited had some performance issues with older wine versions (1.1.xx specifically), but Wine and Crossover teams have done a great job, so now it is possible to play the game with good performances! Let's see...

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

As you can see, i tested the game in 2 different ways: enabling HDR/disabling AA and enabling AA/disabling HDR. It is just a choice (i prefer using HDR which provides awesome natural light effects). Analyzing these tests i found out that Crossover works better than Wine, providing about a 20-30% more FPS. Anyway, the game is fully playable and enjoyable, and the average FPS guarantee a smooth gameplay.

Conclusion: use Crossover XI.

Installation

This process takes about 8 minutes.
The site at the beginning is "www.gamecopyworld.com".
At the end of the installation:

- Download a noDVD crack (this one http://dl.gamecopyworld.com/?c=725495341&d=2007&f=vty-tdu!rar)
- Set "Windows Vista" into Wine Configuration.
- If you use a joypad, use the method explained above to set the keys.

Running

P.S. I'm sorry but i couldn't take a fullscreen gameplay (i don't know why my screencasting applications crashed everytime i started the game on fullscreen mode), but i tell you: the game WORKS on fullscreen!!

That's all. Feel free to send me an email or leave a comment if you got some problems or if you just wanna ask me a question. I will always answer you!
